I’m not a great believer in photographers writing statements about their artistic vision; I hope the photos in my galleries speak for themselves. Photography is one of many pastimes I do – along with fell-running, cycling, sea kayaking and climbing mountains – and in general it fits around those. My ideal photographic day is a morning backpacking in the mountains or around the coast of Iceland or Scotland, followed by an afternoon and evening exploring the surroundings from my tent and sitting on some lonely summit waiting for the light to disappear. My photographs in general record what I see on my travels and have little or no digital manipulation. I have been experimenting with some less faithful recreations of landscapes in my Impressions gallery; these are simply made by panning the camera during an exposure of half a second or so in an attempt to simplify the scene into shape and colour.
I live in Milton Keynes, England and have done since I moved there to do a PhD in geology in 1991. I spent 25 years writing educational software for science students but quit at the end of 2018 to spend more time amongst the hills and islands.

Having spent increasing amounts of time maintaining an ever-growing site at www.andysuttonphotography.com for many years, I took the decision in October 2013 to change my approach. With considerable technical assistance from my son, Michael, I’ve revamped this site as a showcase for a much smaller collection of my best images, collected into themed galleries (inevitably with some overlap) and displayed at much higher quality than before. The much larger volume of photos I’m now uploading to Flickr, which makes updating so much easier to do regularly, displays the images well and reaches a bigger audience than I can here.

Nearly all these images (except smartphone pictures), and around 5000 others of mine, are available to license through the Alamy online picture library. Click the logo below to link to my Alamy homepage, where you can search by keyword for particular images.

These pictures were taken over the last nearly 40 years with a variety of cameras. I started as a 13 year old with a manual Cosina CT-1g and 50mm lens, then graduated to a Pentax Super A and then a variety of Nikons (F50, F60, F65, F80), mostly in conjunction with Sigma and Nikkor zoom lenses. In 2001 I bought a secondhand Hasselblad Xpan panoramic camera, which I loved and used extensively for 10 years until digital completely took over.
I bought my first digital SLR in 2004 - a Nikon D70 – and upgraded to the D80 and D90 over the following years. Since the majority of my photography is done during long backpacking trips or lightweight mountain ascents I’d always been looking for ways to save weight and in 2011 I took the plunge and sold all my DSLR kit and swapped to Olympus micro four-thirds cameras. I now use an OMD EM-5 or, if I’m travelling very light, an EPM-7, and a selection of their tiny lenses. I sometimes carry a handful of Lee ND grad filters, and a lightweight tripod and that’s about it.
From 2018 onwards I started taking more pictures with a smartphone (a sub £200 Motorola Moto G6), which I always carry with me on walks and rides. They might not be good enough quality for sale on Alamy but I've been impressed with the range of tones it captures in HDR mode and in many ways for screen use they're as good or better than with my other cameras, so I've started adding a few on this site.
